Grandstands

A grandstand is a load path: crowd, barrier, wind if it is exposed, then a seat on the riser. Choosing fixed, telescopic, or demountable is a decision about operation, storage, and foundation, not about fabric.

What this gate is

The gate covers the fixed stand, the telescopic stand, galvanizing as a strategy for wet, coastal, and pool halls, and the temporary demountable stand. Fixed work is coordinated with the building structure and its foundation. Telescopic work consumes storage depth and requires floor flatness and a travel path. Demountable work is rebuilt each time, so it is inspected each time.

No page declares conformity to the EN 13200 family. If that standard or the local code is adopted, the declaration belongs to the engineer and the authority. Galvanizing to the ISO 1461 family is a coating. It does not replace the steel section. A safety factor, where one is required, is defined by the applicable standard and the engineer of record, not by this gate.

What is published now

  • Fixed grandstand

Steel geometry, permanent loads, guardrails, aisles, inspection, and coordination with the structure.

  • Telescopic grandstand

Closed storage depth, slab flatness and track, operating space, safety while moving, and when a fixed stand is more honest.

  • Galvanizing

A corrosion strategy for wet, coastal, or pool halls. Paint over zinc is a coordination issue, not a chemistry recipe.

  • Demountable

A temporary event, ballast or anchorage, repeated assembly, and inspection before each use. Not the same as fixed.

When to open this gate

  • Before the slab is designed

The open stand, the closed stack, and a crowd on a fixed stand are different loads. A slab that was not told fails quietly.

  • When the use schedule changes

A hall seated every day does not need a telescopic stand with no operating crew. A coastal ground is not left to painted steel with no corrosion strategy.

  • Before the public is admitted

The temporary stand is inspected at every erection. A certificate from another city does not cover reassembly on different ground.

How to read the subject

  1. 01

Name the load path: riser, raker, foundation or ballast, and barrier. The seat is the last item, not the first.

  2. 02

Ask how often the stand moves and who operates it. Flexibility without a movement procedure is a hazard, not a feature.

  3. 03

Choose the corrosion strategy from the environment: dry interior, coast, or pool chlorine. Galvanizing does not design the section.

  4. 04

Tie sightline and aisle to the structure. A comfortable riser can hide the row behind it if C-value is not calculated with the height.

What this gate does not do

  • Treating the stand as furniture

Ordering chairs with no coordination of slab, barrier, and exit width. The structure is not a catalogue accessory.

  • Telescopic with no storage depth

The stack stays in the room on the day the floor is “clear”. If the depth does not exist, fixed is more honest.

  • An invented conformity claim

Neither this gate nor a coating description declares the stand conformant to an EN. Conformity is a declaration against the adopted edition.

Questions designers and owners ask

When do I choose fixed?

When use is daily, the slab cannot take a moving track, there is no stack depth, or nobody will be employed to operate the movement.

Does galvanizing replace the engineer?

No. ISO 1461 describes a hot-dip coating. Section, connection, and stability remain structural design.

Can I paint over zinc immediately?

Only inside a duplex system agreed with the galvanizer. Preparation and adhesion are coordination. This gate gives no chemistry recipe.

Is demountable a lighter responsibility?

No. Each erection is a new structure until it is inspected. Ballast or anchorage is calculated for that ground and that crowd.

Who sets the barrier height?

The adopted code, measured as that code defines from the nosing or the standing surface. The gate fixes no millimetre.

Technical sources

  • Local code and the engineer of record

Crowd loads, barriers, exits, and the safety factor where a standard states one. This gate does not quote the factor as if it were statute.

  • The EN 13200 family where adopted

Spectator-facility documents. Adoption is a project declaration. The gate does not certify conformity.

  • ISO 1461

The hot-dip galvanizing family. Thickness comes from the galvanizer’s certificate, not from this gate, and the coating is not a structural design.
