Insulation atlas/Classrooms

A classroom is isolated from the next classroom, from the corridor, and from the gym above.

Consonant clarity inside the room is absorption. A pupil not hearing the next lesson is insulation. A school that treats one and leaves the other builds a tiring row of rooms.

Between two classrooms

The range circulated in school guidance, including the British BB93 tradition and its cousins in other codes, often puts DnT,w between ordinary teaching rooms around 45 dB, and higher when one volume is loud, such as music or a workshop. It is a planning range, replaced by the project code’s figure when one exists. A light wall with one layer each side usually falls short. Two layers, a wider cavity, absorption in the void, and no bridge at floor and ceiling, is the build that gets close.

The door and the corridor

A classroom door without seals drops the insulation into the twenties however good the wall. A vision panel is sometimes required for safety; it is made of rated glass, not of a hole. The corridor itself is a source: lockers, bells, a class waiting. Absorption on the corridor ceiling lowers the noise that strikes the door. It does not delete the door.

  • A gym over a classroom: L'nT,w is the line, and a floating floor or a resilient ceiling under the slab, not a carpet alone.
  • An open classroom without doors does not reach the insulation of a closed one. Say so in the brief before the drawing.
  • Inside the classroom, reverberation time is still a separate absorption line. This reference does not delete the calculator page.

Services

A shared duct between two classrooms sometimes carries speech more clearly than a weak wall. An independent branch, or a silencer at each outlet, is drawn with the mechanical engineer. Back-to-back electrical boxes in the same wall are a hole. Offset them and close them with a dense sealant, not with expanding foam left as a bridge.
