How a brief becomes a system
Compound room examples, in plain language for the systems engineer.

Compound examples
- Open-air bowlOutdoors · wide bowl · buildings behind the stage
Failure is double here: bass leaks into buildings, and level is lost to wind before the last row. The fix is cardioid low end, a mix position that hears the bowl as the audience does, and light that follows when the performer is off mark.
- House of worshipSpeech first · music second · long reverb
The product is speech clarity, not level. A central source that carries consonants, delays late enough to disappear, and microphones that do not fight the room. Choir and song get their own path — not a louder copy of the sermon.
- A room that splits and joinsConference by day · show by night · three rooms or one
The system must divide without a new truck. Sound and picture on the same network, and a control surface the banquet captain will actually touch. Evening music is not the daytime preset, and one room at night is not three silent rooms.
Room models
- Arena 8–25k
Long throw, cardioid low end, and a mix position that hears the bowl rather than the stack.
Open-air bowl, about 18,000. Live Arabic pop, spoken intros, residences directly behind the stage. Wind and neighbors are the constraint.
- Worship 400–3k
Intelligibility is the product. A center source, delays that stay invisible, microphones that do not fight the room.
2,200-seat house of worship. Sermon first, choir and nasheed second. Long reverberation. The balcony loses consonants.
- Ballroom 3 rooms
It has to split without a truck. Daytime speech and nighttime music cannot share a preset.
Hotel ballroom that divides into three. Keynotes by day, a gala with a five-piece and speeches by night. The banquet captain will operate it.
- Cinema 8–16 screens
Screen channels, surrounds, and low end with discipline. One premium room, then a standard the rest can share.
Twelve-screen site. House 1 is premium large format. The rest are standard. We need one coherent spec, not twelve inventions.
- Broadcast 1 studio
Close capture, a console that understands picture, and monitoring that tells the truth.
Broadcast studio. Four cameras, a host and two guests, clean foldback, and a mix that has to survive both the room and the feed.
- Hospitality Many zones
Background, paging, and the occasional speech. One operator, too many rooms to visit.
A hotel: lobby, all-day dining, rooftop, and ballroom pre-function. Background music, paging, and the occasional speech. About fourteen zones, one operator.
